![]() Thursday, October 31, 2002 Weird things.... This woman just came into the church looking somewhat lost and asked ' is it alright if i feed my baby in the carpark - currently she is sitting at the far side of the car park obviously passing it on!! Theres just one more thing to add to your list of 10 useful things to do in a church car park! Other weird stuff... I had a dream that i became a father last night - no idea who the mother was - all i know is that i was holding this baby that was mine and that the baby was just like SJ - weird stuff! posted by charlie | 11:03 AM | 24/3 The non stop 72 hour prayer session at the church kicked off tonite. For the next 3 days at least one person will be spending time down at the church praying for all sorts of things. If you are about here - do be involved if you can - all sorts of things can happen when you set aside time to listen and time to ask. Make a mark in Eternity - go for it! posted by charlie | 12:12 AM | A new addition to the family!! We just had a guy called Chris Scott move in with us yesterday, he'll be living with us for the next year or so. He's from america but has been about the place over the past few years. Part of what he's doing over here is to help with some of the youthwork down at mum and dad's church and i'm sure there's more that he will discover as he goes along. Pray for him as he settles in with us, pray for us that we will make him feel at home and love him well and that both our lives will be positively altered as we explore this new territory in life. posted by charlie | 12:07 AM | Monday, October 28, 2002 Some changes to Formula 1 posted by charlie | 7:38 PM | Just 2 posts down i mentioned that good advice on sex etc. is hard to com by. Some might say the bible is a pretty good place for some advice, and i must say i agree with them, that is unless you are reading the King James version from 1631, which in a pretty big printing blunder printed Exodus 20:14 saying 'You shalt commit adultery' - I'll leave it to you to say whether you think that is good advice or not!! posted by charlie | 2:09 PM | Sunday, October 27, 2002 I watched Vanilla Sky this week - it's definitely not your average movie - it twists and turns like the country roads around Ballynahinch and it leaves your head pickled right through. It's based on a very abstract idea so don't be watching it if you're wanting to relax or if you're sleepy! Having said that I did enjoy it - probably for that very reason - it's like a puzzle that needs to be solved. However whether the puzzle will or can be solved is another issue - it appears the movie was made with this confusing element intentionally. On the DVD commentary the Director said 'Vanilla Sky is a movie that offers you an invitation and it will meet you wherever you want it to.' It's just interesting that part of the goal of the movie was simply to stimulate discussion and and to encourage people to fill in some of the holes themselves! posted by charlie | 4:30 PM | I've been chatting about sex, left right and centre over the past few weeks - at church, at LIFE conferences and at the rugby club - although each have offered me quite different perspectives!!! It's really great to hear and see this issue beginning to be dealt with openly in church - it's too big a part of all our lives now for us to leave it a 'taboo' subject. May the conversation continue! One thing that has been mentioned often is that most people get all their info about sex from the media and particuarly magazines - the reality is that there has been a bit of a famine of reliable info anywhere else. Hence this little posting.I checked out the Love for life website and found that they have a pretty good website offering spot on advice and info, including plenty on the often dodged issues. The FAQ section is particuarly good - perhaps you can add a question. Anyway go check it out! posted by charlie | 4:17 PM | Saturday, October 19, 2002 Travelled to Dungannon to play their 2's today. We had been expecting a tough challenge but in the end it wasn't so bad and we won 31-0 - As old Weeksy would say in his fine aussie accent - 'Bring that on!' posted by charlie | 11:24 PM | Friday, October 18, 2002 Watched 'The Beautiful Mind' last night and would definitely recommend it. Both the movie itself and Russell Crowe totally deserved all the awards they got. It gives an amazing insight into the life of someone with mental health problems and also portrays a positively powerful message about what love is all about. Go rent it ! posted by charlie | 11:34 PM | Thursday, October 17, 2002 Greetings friends, The second part, of The Lord of the Rings series, The Two Towers is due to be released on December 18th. No doubt the movie will again, like the one before it, reawaken a sense of imagination and fantasy throughout our land and therefore can I urge you not be without your Hobbit Name! From your dear friend, Grigory Gamwich of the Bree Gamwiches posted by charlie | 5:48 PM | Monday, October 14, 2002 Well my journeys over the last week have taken me all sorts of places and occasionally not to some places! I've been to Craigavon, Omagh, Dublin, Avoca, and Londonderry. The events of Friday night are worth recording for future laughs. A bunch of 45 of us were heading to Avoca, Co. Wicklow for the annual Snr Yth weekend. We got everyone packed in, even managing to get Rebecca Callaghan's and Peter Bell's bags squeezed in. We hit the road and planned to stop at Drogheda for a feed and fuel etc. When we got there I put some fuel in the car just to get me down to our destination. Anyway we got on the road again and all was well until about 15 minutes later when my car cut out on the Motorway. I thought i had stauled and stopped the car but it wouldn't start again, Peter Bell (the one with the biggest bag in the world!) asked me if i'd run out of fuel...i replied.. 'no i filled up in Drogheda'.... and then it hit me... i had put Unleaded into a Diesel car.......ahhhhhh ***** ahhhhh! Here i was with 6 other people in the car - 70 miles from home and 70 miles to avoca, in the middle of nowehere with a car that was going nowhere. Luckily Dave D was behind me and stopped. We footered around for a few hours trying to figure out what to do. Eventually we bought a tow rope and towed the car to the nearest filling station. Dave then drove to Avoca with his load and returned to take my load - well over 4.5 hours driving straight - Dave - much respect is due! My carload's stay was helped by a rather generous Lithuanian shop attendant who offered us free newsapapers and coffee -although at first he wouldn't let us into the shop because of Johnny Shield's and Stuart Eadie's rather outrageous tinfoil hats- he must have thought they were on something! Anyway I stayed with the car for the night awaiting the arrival of an experienced mechanic who was to arrive in the morning. The sleep in the car was fine except a bit cold - my nose was freezing and i woke up every so often to put on a an extra item of clothing. Morning came and the experienced mechanic arrived - a little Irish man called Noel who actually worked on Aircraft engines not cars. I got a bit worried when Noel identified the unleaded fuel by tasting it as opposed to the usual smelling technique. At first Noel looked a bit bewildered but soon came up with an action plan - he didn't have nay equipment with him so we headed to his house to get some stuff. His plan was to cyphen the fuel out of the engine which as i understand it means to put a pipe into the fuel tank, suck it some, then remove your mouth before the fuel hits the end of the pipe to start a flow. Noel had it all right except for the remove your mouth bit and proceeded to swallow a right bit of unleaded. He then proceeded to cough, splutter and spit this stuff out. Normal folks would say thats enough but Noel was having none of it - in his own words he said 'I don't like this one getting the better of me', and so he kept at this sucking business and the forseeable after effects for the next 20 minutes or so. Just before he was about to die he decided we would be better taking the car to a proper mechanic. With many apologies for not being able to help he jumped in the car and that was the last we saw him - I've no idea whether or not he got home - with the amount of petroleoum he had in his system the journey home must have been interesting to say the least! Anyway my Dad ended up coming down and we towed the car home with my wee polo - 90 miles towing! Right now the car is in being fixed at Glebe motors. I eventually made it to Avoca on the Saturday night at 11:00 after a rugby match (which we won 56-6 against Instonians) and the intro at Mannafest. When i arrived at Avoca i heard about Jamie's toe nail which had propelled itself up from his toe and taken him to A+E for a 5 hour wait just south of Dublin. Otherwise the weekend was great for everyone - lots of fun, little sleep, many new friendships made, old ones deepened, lessons learned (particuarly about fuel and car compatability) and God glorified in and through our community. posted by charlie | 10:53 PM | Watched a nature programme on TV last week. Did you know a swift doesn't touch the ground for 2 years after it leaves the nest! It eats by catching bugs and stuff and then even more outstanding - to sleep, it climbs to about 6000 feet and then just nods of for while - I have a feeling that a sleep in may loose its appeal for such creatures! posted by charlie | 10:13 PM | I've been taking part in LIFE conferences for the past week or so. LIFE are a pro-life organisation and at the minute i'm helping them to present part of their roadshow around the north. Some of the stuff they've been saying is absolutely fascinating, particuarly the info. on the development of the baby in the womb. I'm going to try and find some good websites to link with for some of this info - it's really worth hearing! posted by charlie | 10:05 PM | Sunday, October 06, 2002 For my traditional Sunday afternoon walk I headed to the Arboretum at Castlewellan today. Its a totally awe inspiring place that has this magical feel to it! In fact at one time Dave D. told his kids it was narnia and they believed him! For me it kinda feels like what i percieved the Garden of Eden to be like before the fall. Anyway some of the trees are absolutely massive and then some are just plain different! Like Drumkeeragh a few weeks ago it was a very sensual experience to walk around that place - so i highly recommend it! posted by charlie | 10:45 PM | Tonight was the first night of Beyond the Edge held at the Edge believe it or not. It was a cracking night and offered much proof that spiritual things need not be boring and lifeless. The night contained a fast moving programme of video clips, interviews, quizzes and drama's - all giving some input on the theme of Truth and Reality. It was special to see so many 'Edge' young people present and to be able to build on the relationships that have developed over the past few years. Paul Coles - if you are reading this - well done mate - God used you in this one - you know he didn't have to but he definitely did. If you are not Paul Coles and happen to be reading this then pray for Paul Coles - that God would envision and equip Paul for the task of building the Kingdom at the Edge and in the wider place of Ballynahinch! posted by charlie | 10:28 PM | Won the rugby on Saturday 14-8 - we (Hinch 2's) were playing against the scum -aka Harlequins- so it was especially great to get the win. Even better was that i got a free burger after the match. Bad news is that Andy Edgar may have fractured his leg. It was also bad to hear that Ben Wilson fractured his jaw. Pray for Ben as he gets an operation on Monday. posted by charlie | 10:19 PM | Got the following in a reliable email - i bet not to many of you watch GMTV but worth posting anyway! Next week 7th-11th October 2002 has been designated Psychic week on Britain's Good Morning TV (GMTV). I am asking you to do a couple of very simple things: 1. do not watch GMTV next week 2. send this to all your Christian friends if we all switch off across the country their viewing figures will drop 3. pray that this negative influence will not spread and that the God's Kingdom would continue to overrule. Pray for the vulnerable that they will not be deceived and for Christians to (a) refrain from watching and (b) have answers ready when this will inevitably come up in conversation. It is no coincidence that this comes right in the middle of Power to Change. posted by charlie | 10:14 PM | Thursday, October 03, 2002 Just a wee thought: i got this feeling last weekend that i really wanted to share my faith with people - i think it was God working in my heart - but to be honest i wondered how i would get the opportunities - so i prayed - God please give me some opportunities this week- and he has - Prayer simple but effective. Try listening to God's heartbeat in you and in faith dare to believe it's possible that things can happen! posted by charlie | 12:03 AM | Wednesday, October 02, 2002 You'll never guess what..............Roast Beef flavour Monster Munch are back on the the shelves! I know that might not mean that much to y'all but i loved them when i was a kid and really struggled to deal with their removal from the market all those years ago. For a long time i wished for their return but thought it impossible, admittedly it did my heart good today when i stumbled across them in the crisp section of the Barbican in Newcastle. So excited by this dream com true i decided that i might try and find out why they were back. I went to the walkers website and found the marketing page for the returned crisp. There i found that my much beloved crisps had been relaunched because the makers had recieved 40+ requests for their return every month - so i wasn't on my own with these feelings! So here's the lesson guys. Marketers listen to our requests. Is there any item that has been removed from the shelves that has caused your heart pain? If so get onto the makers and beg for their return.....i might just write to Kellogs for the return of Honey Smacks, the bbc might even bring back Gordon the Gopher if we ask nicely! posted by charlie | 11:52 PM | |
