Excuse me for this Mike but i get excited about your life.....

Mike Allen is passionate about farming, i don't always understand why, but he just seems to love it. He is an expert on spuds and has an amazing amount of wisdom reagrding all things agricultural. When i hear him talk farming stuff I just sense this overflowing enthusiam in his words, and when i hear about the crazy amount of hours he enjoys spending on the farm, my suspicions are confirmed.

Mike Allen also loves God and has committed himself to working out and living out God's way for his life. He takes time to pursue this relationship with God, in his own time out and in community time at youth group, church and cell groups - all signs of his commitment.

I suppose what excites me about Mike is that he is beginning to see that his passion for farming and his relationship with God are not co-incendental, that somehow they fit together to form something of his destiny. He is learning that God can both be seen and met at the farm and that the work he does at the farm forms part of his worship and mission. A good example of what Bridge the Gap was getting onto the other day.

Mike, may God bless you as you continue to serve him on the farm in Hillsborough, continue to seek him out and to lay down what you do before him. I know that many in Northern Ireland are greatly blessed each time they sit down to a good portion of Irish spuds in the many forms they come to us in.

Me and Mike Allen found a marble lying in the church car park today, obviously someone had lost their marbles (sorry couldn't resist that one!). Anyway as we played around with it I pondered as to how marbles were made. So i came into the office and with the help of ask jeeves i found and answer.

In school today the kids were working on their creative english skills, their task being to describe a smarty. One was worthy of note.

Q/ What does the smarty feel like?
A/ It feels like a lamp post

Fair to say there's major issues there!!!!!

And while you're here - did you know that nearly 16,000 smarties are eaten every minute in the uk? [source: Nestle]

Nala has developed this strange habit. She stumbles across the excrament of other animals, picks it up in her mouth, lets go of it, the rolls around on it, smudging it all through her coat.......i mean what the flip is she doing?????

Rugby club formal/awards night

Got dolled up on Saturday night for the rugby club formal/awards night. I was rather pleased that i didn't have to part with any cash for the outfit - i figured no-one would see the difference between a black suit and a tux in the dim light, dad provided one of his old butterfly collared shirts from yonder years and also a black bow tie - the result - i saved £35.

The night was great craic - i ended up at the singles table, as one guy said - 'There's no point in bringing a lady friend, cos if she's someone you really like you're screwed cos she'll not want much to do with you afterwards (ie.after she witnesses the exploits of some of your companions!) and you wouldn't bring someone you aint that fussed on cos it's £25 for a ticket.' Anyway, being at that table made for plenty of laughs but not the usual double portions that one usually recieves when an XX (chromosomal reference) sits beside them. The food was good - potato and leek soup, roast beef, cauliflower, carrots, spuds (roasted and mashed) and a lovely cheesecake to finish. After dinner we had the awards and some speeches - some more eloquent than others - all entertaining. The band were dodgy enough, suffice to say the lead singer had a mullet and mullets don't go terribly well with a Belfast accent! However most didn't seem to care and entertained us with their movements. The night was polished off with a good old renditioning of the Hinch anthem, the hymn, 'shall we gather at the river'.

I did some lifts afterwards and finally got to bed at around 4.

Ballynahinch High 5 - 10 Ballymoney High

Great atmosphere and great weather at Ravenhill today. Unfortunately the boys weren't able to pull off the win. Kinda feel for them - they've made the final 3 years in a row now but aint got a win yet.

Trevor Ferguson (aka Sprickle) ran the first skill sharing session last night out in Dromara and it was great craic. He showed us how to build a block wall and then let us have a go, 'Generation game' style. The end result looked surprisingly well and along with Paul Coles i went home feeling like a man. That said, the girls team made a wall that was as sturdy, if not more so than ours!

Trevor also introduced us to Max, his 11 stone Rotweiler - lets just say i didn't make too many sudden movements!

Went to Annalong (the Cornmill Quay - beautiful place!) this weekend past with Carryduff Baptist Young people. Had a great weekend on many levels. Some amazing food (an ungreasy fry both mornings!), lots of stupid games (all the golden oldies), plenty of chats, and several interactive and honest sessions thinking about life with God.

1 little discovery: the message translation of the fruit of the spirit (galatians 5:22) - like the translation of 'joy' - i also found out that the online bible has the message translation available!

Really enjoyed rugby this weekend past. Firstly, there was amazing weather which means, good surface underfoot, a grippy ball and your nads don't freeze off (unlike most other saturdays @ Ballymacarn). Secondly, i got a couple of tries and that was nice having not scored since half way through November - i definitely got that buzz again! Finally, our team won 36-13 and continued the unbeaten streak this season.

Thought provoking......

“Instead of starting churches in the typical sense—meetings, programs, buildings, etc., why not work with God to FORM the church he has and is “starting?” “We keep trying to make Sunday church into “community” with people driving to these meetings from 20-30 minutes away. We then try to fix this obvious lack of community by adding some form of ‘home group”. Now people drive 20-30 minutes to a second meeting and we fool ourselves into thinking we have created community. While striving mightily to form these “pseudo-communities” we lose twice: First, these meetings can never amount to true community—true community, by definition (with the exception of cyber communities? I’m not sure about this one yet, but I’m open…), has a strong geographical component. True community requires routine, unplanned contact—like what you have at work, school, neighborhood, etc. Here is the second loss: while running to meetings of this sort—and thinking of them as our Christianity—we ignore the authentic communities we are already in! We neglect the very places we could be working with God as ambassadors of the Kingdom to form (educate, grow in grace and true spirituality, grow in numbers as new Followers of Christ are added, etc.).

Turned up in school today and a sub teacher was in - this is the first i have had such a situation. Thought it would be weird but as i walked in I recognised the bloke and it turned out to be Zoe's brother in law - Rodney. So that was cool - he's in tomorrow too. He did some cool art which the kids really seemed to enjoy - i must confess i enjoyed it too, if only as a spectator!

Singuarly Significant

Thought last night's service was great.

Loved Rossane's talk - she's a very gifted communicator - Great content (probably cos she was humble enough to ask for the help of a pile of others in putting together the material - team is what it's all about i think), very little waffle, straight to the point - a nice syncronisation of humour, sattire and serious stuff - it seemed she had chosen each word very carefully and thoughtfully, with the result being immense clarity in what she said.
Very honest - Rossanne said it as it was. Heather's testimony was also brutally honest and real (i just think there is so much power in humble honesty and transparency, unfortunately it's not something churches have always been known for!)

I was privelaged to spend yesterday afternoon with the Ellison family (thanks to Stevie's invitation!). I really did have one of the most fun days that i've had in a while. James and Dean got BMX's for christmas and they've constructed a big ramp out the back of their house - we had plenty of craic before lunch just jumping and stuff - it all reminded me of my younger days when i rode bikes 24/7. Ruth cooked an amazing feed for lunch and Jack (who is 5) provided much entertainment and also asked some stirring but thoughtful questions! (eg. 'Charlie - do you know english?' I replied, 'yes i know some,' to which he said 'God knows everything.') After lunch i took the guys up to Snotsninsky where we watched some sheep, did some downhill on the BMX's and Jack jumped off rocks! Afterwards we were piggin' and so i headed home for a shower before going to church. So thankyou Ellisons for a great sabbath!!

I love free stuff
I was down at the church on Wednesday night for the 'centre' and Rosemary G was also there sorting out the church library. It came to my attention that she was chucking out a pile of books (a good choice for most of the books that i saw!). However I thought i might flick thru them cos I'm always tempted by the possibility of getting something free. As i flicked i found an old Hudson Taylor biography. I was dead excited about this cause I've been looking for one of these for ages, including several hunts through Faith Mission. So me is very happy with this little free find. I'm sure I'll be sharing somethings as I read.
