![]() Friday, June 27, 2003 After lots of weeks full of team meetings, preparation and fundraising activities the 2003 Ukraine trip has come upon us. Our team of 30 leaves the church in 4 hours time. We're flying from Dublin to Budapest to Kiev and then on to the destination for the camps. I'm in a place called Kmelnitsky the first week doing a youth camp with 12 of the other folks on the team. This will involve sports, improvisational dramas, presentations, discussions and lots of laughs!! The second week we're heading down to the south of Ukraine - to the Crimea - this time to do a childrens camp - lots of crafts and games. Hopefully i'll find someone to blog over there to keep you up to date with the goings on. We'd really love your prayers for safety in travel, for good team bonding and for many lives to be transformed at the camps. posted by charlie | 10:48 PM | Fun times in the week past.......... So we all headed up the road to find a guy has rolled his car just up from our house. Initially he is standing but can't for long as his back is killing him, he wasn't wearing a seat belt and had got thrown around pretty badly. Anyway as we talked it was obvious he had a ton of drink in him and was pretty far gone. As we talked he decided he was too warm, he insisted on taking his jumper off, he refused any blankets and demanded we went and got him water, inspite of the fact he was shivering pretty bad. The emergency services had told us on the phone not to give him water, to which he replied, 'Get me some f'king water or i'll get up and get some myself from the lake down there', at which point he tried to get up. However as he tried to get up his back let off probably the loudest and most painful sounding crack i've ever heard coming from someone's body - the noise will haunt me. Anyway at that he lay down again and then began to demand we got him some tobacco from his car. Not long after the police arrived and then the ambulance - they weren't that sympathetic though. This is the second drunk driving incident we've had outside our house since we moved in. It just hits home the messgae of all those adverts you see. posted by charlie | 7:27 PM | Painful! The PE teacher at the High school, Latimer Adair, who is also gets me loads of work coaching had a rather unfortunate incident this week. He was out the sports pitches bending over to pick something up when all of a sudden out of nowhere a javelin shot out of the air and went 2.5 inches into his leg, just missing a major artery. He pulled it out himself, rang the school himself to let them know what had happened and then proceeded to casualty where he got 3 stitches (not alot - it must have went in clean!). posted by charlie | 7:19 PM | Congratulations to Niall and Nadine on gettting engaged!!! posted by charlie | 7:15 PM | Monday, June 16, 2003 I went with our P6's today up to the High school for a Primary school sports tournament, kinda like it's a knock out. Glad to say my team, Spa A won, with over 11 other schools involved!! All the kids got a gold medal and we took home a big trophy! posted by charlie | 6:19 PM | JUST A LITTLE REMINDER UKRAINE TEAM FUNDRAISER SATURDAY 21st JUNE 2003 @ ballynahinch baptist church CAR BOOT SALE [£5 per car] 11:00 - 1:00 + CARWASH [£3 minimum donation] 10:00 - 5:00 posted by charlie | 6:17 PM | Bad craic last Wednesday night when my laptop decided to cease functioning. In the process of getting it fixed i had to accept the awful news that everything on the computer would be wiped - so i just lost nearly 9 months of stuff including, talks, reflective notes, powerpoint presentations and my highest score in pc pinball! I also lost all my contact details and my diary for the coming months - it's a cert that i don't turn up at something! But hey thats the way life goes...... i've been told for ages to back stuff up and never did so alot of it is my own fault! posted by charlie | 6:15 PM | Friday, June 13, 2003 National Statistics online - some interesting stuff posted by charlie | 5:06 PM | Monday, June 09, 2003 Much Craic at Spinkwee River Got the chance to go camping last thursday evening and then a little hike the next day. I walked up through Tollymore, meeting a deer and a red squirrel on my way to meet Weeksy and Pete who had walking that afternoon. We had a great night out. After collecting a pile of wood we got cooking and enjoyed some of Dan's pasta delights, alongside some custard and chocolate. After that we stoked up the fire, placed nicely, right on the river bank and under the shelter of a massive big oak tree. The rain was coming down all around us but we stayed reasonably dry with the heat of the fire. The craic was great as we forgot all about the outside world and just enjoyed the craic. At about 1100 a very wet Johnny negotiated his way up to the campsite after getting slightly mislaid through the dark forest, however he definitely brought some extra joy with a few goodies to put down our necks. After many hours around the fire we headed the tents and enjoyed a real good nights sleep. When we woke in the morning the sky was blue as can be and the sun was beating down. We cooked up a fry and just sat around enjoying the rays and i personally enjoyed a little more of my Johnny Cash autobiography. After a lazy morning we packed up the tents and headed up the hills behind us up to the Mourne Wall. The view into the valley of Ben Crom and Slieve Bernagh were outstanding and the good weather meant we could actually walk along the wall for ages - the wall always amazes me - its so wide and the stones are so big - whoever got them up there deserves alot of respect. Anyway we carried on up to Comedagh where we came across the lovely view of a man wiping his behing. Nonetheless we enjoyed the other surrounding beauties. Our descent was slow and included a few falls but the weather was still amzing so we were in no rush. We finished off the walk a dip in the Glen river to cool down. Back in Newcastle under Ricey's guidance we headed to the KEBAB House and enjoyed a big donor. A really enriching 24 hours! posted by charlie | 11:41 PM | Kicks I used to have athletes foot pretty bad - the result was hundreds of hours wasted each year scratching in between my toes til they were red raw and bleeding. after years of being addicted to this hateful habit i turned over a new leaf and commited myself to a new future leaving my toes in tact. to the present moment this has been sucessful although i would be quick to mention that temptation aint left me completely. however this sucess has not been without cost for indeed a new itch, in fact 2 new itches, equally addictive have arisen, one in my left ear, one in my right ear. Upon the slightest itch arisiing i willingly take hold of any reasonably hard edged object and twist it and turn it within my ear - such as a key, or a pen, or a hair clip. In similar fashion to the way my feet reacted the result has been that the skin in my ears gets broken. This of course opens the pores to all sorts of infection and this then generates some might big spots in my ears - these then get mega itchy and i feel this overwhelming urge to scratch them, so i do leaving open skin. And this is why i started this little post - I have recently discovered quite a kick in the old faithful TCP antiseptic liquid. It's sting is much better than any itch and it's good for my ear too!! Give it a go! posted by charlie | 11:24 PM | UKRAINE TEAM FUNDRAISER SATURDAY 21st JUNE 2003 @ ballynahinch baptist church CAR BOOT SALE [£5 per car] 11:00 - 1:00 + CARWASH [£3 minimum donation] 10:00 - 5:00 please spread the word about these two goings on, particuarly the carboot sale | all money raised goes directly to running camps for ukrainian young people posted by charlie | 12:41 PM | Wednesday, June 04, 2003 Crazy story via jordon cooper posted by charlie | 12:07 PM | Tuesday, June 03, 2003 Why is it that on Countdown the two people who have the dictionary always seem to get the longest word? They only have 30 seconds like the contestants, they don't seem to have a computer or anything but always seem to come out on top, often with about 3 possible words that are longer than those of the contestants - on top of this they also seem to have time to check the contestants words to see if they are genuine or not - I'm baffled...... posted by charlie | 7:24 PM | |
