Dentist wasn't too bad. I heard 'sound' enough times to make me happy!! Did get two fillings today and have to return in a month's time for 3 more. Today cost me £38.40, next time will cost around £45. Could have been worse, like dentures or something!!

Never kill a question;
it is a fragile thing.
A good question deserves to live.
One doesn't so much answer it as converse with it,
or, better yet, one lives with it.
Great questions are the permanent
and blessed guests of the mind.
But the greatest questions of all
are those which build bridges to the heart,
addressing the whole person.

No answer should be designed to kill the question.
When one is too dogmatic, or too sure,
one shows disrespect for the truth
and the question which points toward it.
Beyond my answer there is always more,
more light waiting to break in,
and waves of inexhaustible meaning
waiting to break against wisdom's widening shore.

Wherever there is a question, let it live!

Dentist tomorrow

I've to go to the dentist tomorrow afternoon. Not looking forward to it really. Two reasons for this. Firstly, i haven't been since i left high school in 1999 and by the way i eat there's bound to be right bit of damage (two fillings have fallen out in the past 8 months!) Secondly, i now have to pay for the pleasure of visiting the masked man!! This is made worse in light of the first reason, as it could end up costing me a fair amount to repair all the damage done over this extended period of time......

On the otherhand i'm hoping that my twice daily brushing and regular flossing will have saved me a little.....time will tell!

Elma Interview returns!!

It was great to see the Elma interview back on last night for the first time in a while. I like it cause it's people's stories and those are hard to argue with! It's also good to see some of the stuff we read about in the bible and hear about in sermons, earthed in real, open to see lives.

How do you do it??

People sometimes find it weird that before eating my weetabix i pour hot water around it, then add the milk. However one of the girls in school today took things to another level completely. She explained to us that she loves to butter her weetabix before consumption!!

Food

Today in science we were talking/learning about food and why we need it. We ended up with the following answers...

1/ It is needed to provide us with energy
2/ It is need to keep us healthy
3/ It is needed for growth and repair.

Usually when i think about food, my primary concerns are it's taste and whether i feel full or not. Occasionally i consider it in terms of how it will effect my fitness or game performance. In my mind food is often no more than something to enjoy. However, just hearing these things about food today, particuarly the last two, just caused me to appreciate it as something more than a luxury and in doing so made a little more grateful for the food i recieve and the things it does that i don't often think about. It also made me think about those who don't have it in abundance like we do, of those whose whose bodies can't repair themselves, of those whose bodies can't stay healthy, of those who can't carry out life's necessities because they have no energy.

Tonight i will definitely be a little more grateful for the food i'm given.

Movies watched over Christmas

Blow..... Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz (the one with the accent!) star in this movie based on the true story of George Jung who grew from a casual drug user in California during the 60's to become the US's biggest cocaine smuggler. The films documents the growth of his drug trade but also zooms in on the effect his activities had on his relationships. The film provokes a few different reactions to Jung. On one hand you get annoyed, even disgraced at him for the way he treats others and also the business he is in. However on the otherhand you see a little of the softer, more lifey side to him, the person who has got caught in his own web, the person who has gained everything the world has to offer but who has lost the things he most wanted. The DVD also features interviews with the real George Jung who is currently serving time for his crimes.

LOTR - Return of the King....
Gollum and the war scenes impressed me as usual. The power of the ring over people reminded me alot of my own temptations. Also felt 'sacrifice' was a fairly major theme - that made me uncomfortable cos it asks things of me. The sole task of Frodo's journey was not for himself but for others in the shire - that reminded me of somone else!

Amelie......A french movie(subtitles) movie, quite arty but enjoyable. About a girl who brings lots of joy to others but in doing so overlooks/avoids dealing with her own dreams and desires. Eventually she pursues her dreams and falls in love.

Changing Lanes....
Ben Affleck and Samuel L Jackson in this rather enjoyable drama about a car accident and the sequence of events that follow highlighting the best and worst of human character. Some good stuff to say! Reminds me of Phonebooth for some reason.

Enough......Worst movie of 2003 and possibly ever!! Jennifer Lopez stars in this one and it seems like she directed it too for it seems not a lot of thought went into it. Full of cheese, very patchy plot, very predictable apart from the odd bizarre bit which comes out of nowhere. Maybe worth watching just for the slagging!!

Analyse That...... Robert de Niro and Billy Crystal. Fun movie following the relationship between a Mafia leader and his neurotic shrink. Bad side - lots of uneeded strong language.

The Majesty....... Jim Carrey, although not in comedy mode. Carrey on the run after being accused of being a communist, ends up in a car crash and gets a bad case of amnesia. he ends up in a small town and is mistaken for One of that town's young men who had left for the war and never returned - of course he is none the wiser. His return brings a new lease of life to the town until it's discovered that he is not who they had thought. In the end everything works out well after a few moments thinking it would not!! Good to watch these movies once every so often.

Alive........ Wow. This is the true story about a rugby team whose plane went down in the Andies and who survived for over 10 weeks, their only sustenance being there dead friends flesh. Amazing story of survival!

thoughts to follow....
