Some revelations in the classroom

On the subject of fishing one of the kids with clear hunter/gatherer persuasions, was telling me this week that he caught one of the fish in his fishtank one day. He told that he put a maggot on a hook, lowered it into the tank and watched his goldfish take the bait. He then described how it was hard to slip the hook out so he just had to 'rip it out!'

And in Science talking about acids and alkalis another fella was telling us this week that he loves to eat his Granny's Gaviscon tablets, saying, 'They're just like sweets!'

Been a few weeks since i posted. A few things been on the go.

> Johnny plus one, by the name of Bethany, returned from Arkansas. Bethany has the unenviable task of trying to survive in our household for 6 weeks. There's now two down and she's doing pretty good - my struggle is to remember to cover myself with adequate amounts of clothing in the morning when i arise!

> Alongside Bethany's arrival has come a basketball net. She's a pro putting us all to shame, but the net is providing many fun moments. Anyone is welcome over for a game of H-O-R-S-E sometime!

> Noticed a squirrel at our house for the first time this week. And then just across the lake came across a female pheasant and a pile of her chicks this week - superb - the chicks are much smaller than i would have thought.

> Had a few fundraisers for the Ukraine team heading away in the summer. Last week was the car wash/car boot sale/beauty day which raised a superb £2400 and then some Frolics out at the Spence's farm last night which raised over £1000.

> Also last weekend was at Keith Hamilton's stag night. Went to the 'Indian Ocean' at the Odyssey. Great night out. Food was good (i do prefer Mexican or Chinese but the change was pleasant), craic was good, especially a chat with a few computer coder's about their job, who described what they do as modern day bricklayers. They also talked about 'Architects' and 'vandals' in the computer world. Fascinating for someone like me who know's nothing about such things!

> Tag rugby started this week. We got beat in our first game although we were playing our toughest rivals. It is an annoying game in some ways because so often you have the guy right in front of you and in normal rugby you would tackle him no problem, but in tag it can be so easy to miss the tag and he get's through. Anyway we might get another snap at these guys in the final if we get there.

> Connected with rugby also been training three times a week. I'm not really getting an off season this year. Lifting weights most of the time, seeing some encouraging results and also doing some speed training. Hopefully over time i'll gain a little weight and get a wee bit quicker. Feel's like hard work right now doing it all but i may as well have a snap at it all while I can. Now is about the best chance i'll have at getting a few games for the 1st's.

> Finally, i booked my flights to the States this week. Heading into Chicago, then onto San Francisco for my mate Clarkey's wedding (and a few of the sites - Alcatraz, Golden Gate etc) and then to Nashville for a week to catch up with some of my friends down there. I think i'm going to hire out a car while i'm out there too - never done that before but fancy the challenge!.

Watched a programme last night on BBC 1 about CS Lewis. It was fascinating to hear that he loved the landscapes of Co. Down and that they gave him a fair bit of inspiration for the 'Chronicles of Narnia.'

About the Mournes he said, '..they make me feel that at any moment a giant might raise his head over the next ridge.'
Crazy that these beautiful landscapes are right on our doorstep.

7 pints left

I donated my first pint of blood today at Magheradroll Parish. I've kinda been thinking about doing this for a while now, so when i saw the advert saying they were coming to Ballynahinch i felt i had to give it a go - i know i'd appreciate the blood if i ever needed it. To be honest I was a little apprehensive about the needle, i'm not that fond of them, and I was also concerned about feeling weak afterwards but it really was fine - i felt the needle going in but after that there was no pain at all, a wee lady talked to me - i wouldn't even have known blood was leaving me. I would now have no quams at all about doing it again. In fact I'll probably look forward to it - you feel pretty good afterwards cause you feel like you've helped a little. Think I'll try and get one of those multiple donation certificates.

And incase you fancied having a go and you just happened to be free tomorrow (Wed 5th) i know the people are there from 12-4 and 5-8 again. Basically you just go down, fill in a few forms and if eveything's alright they'll take your blood there and then.

fairly active bank holiday weekend.
(this will be a boring read - i'm writing it for my own memory's sake)

Friday night headed to SY. An interesting night talking a wee bit about the end of the world and how we should approach the topic. Afterwards had a fun playing a bit of indoor.

On Saturday i watched the rally at Drumkeeragh. It was a small clubman's event with an entry field of of about 30. At this level all the drivers rally have a go and it showed at the end of the day when the field was down to about 19 drivers - the majority that dropped out, putting their cars in the ditch. The weather was superb which made it a cracker albeit a bit dusty.

Headed to the Ramada on Saturday evening for Spencer and Andrea's wedding party - was a great nights craic. They're now away to Mexico which should be an amazing time.

Yesterday i had a bit of a lie in, had a bite of lunch and then scaled the lofty heights of Slieve Croob which has some of the best panoramic views in the North, better than Donard i reckon because of it's location. Last evening i headed to church in Carryduff and then out with Niall McC to Hillsborough for a good night just catching up (it just so happened that a heat for Ms Northern Ireland was going on in the same place - can't say this made the night any better - i reckon if you're entering such an event you have a few vanity issues!!!)

Today, Mum, Gregory and myself headed to Brennans for a spot of lunch and then to the Butterfly house Nursery in Seaforde - Mum wanted to look at plants. I now plan to return there sometime soon to have a look around the actual butterfly house. One pretty cool thing about the place is the peacocks dandering about everywhere - absolutely beautiful birds. This afternoon i did some weights - gotta try and get 3 sessions a week in now during the off season. I then headed to Temple for a game of tennis with Greg - we'll keep the result a secret for humilty's sake!!

Now about to head to D'Keeragh with Al for a a dander with the dogs!
