Norn Irish Flick

Made an intentional trip to the cinema this evening to see a Northern Irish film just released and going by the name of ‘Mickybo and me’. Turned out to be a cracker not least because it featured one of my favourite places in the world……Drumkeeragh!

Basically the story is about two wee lads knocking about the streets of 70’s Belfast and who end up getting a bit carried away in a fantasy world where they emulate their heroes from the movies, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid! It isn’t long before their escapades end up with them having to do a runner in the direction of ‘Australia’ with the law hot on their tails!

As I said, an absolute cracker. The wee kids were hilarious mainly because of their language (which was fairly coarse but accurately reflective of the time and place - thats what made it funny!) but also great to see so many familiar places on the big screen (Castlewellan, Tate's Avenue, Portrush, Donaghadee). Really is a must for any Northern Irish people (would love to hear some none norn irish opinion).

A night out in the Hills

Took a trip last night up to the Slieve Croob Inn. It's a nice spot way out on it's own in the Dromara Hills (safe to say it wouldn't be the most cosmopolitan place in the world). I'd been there a few times during the day for food and a couple of times at night during the week but had never been up on a weekend night - wasn't really sure what to expect! We decided we would just pop in for a drink and then head on somewhere else like the beach or something afterwards. However the craic was mighty and we ended up staying there right into the early hours. Much of this was down to the live entertainment in the form of some singer/guitar player(backing tracks etc) called Gerry Walsh.

When we arrived we grabbed some desserts and noticed Gerry was setting up so we figured we would wait and see what he was like. This was about 9:00 or so. The place was quiet so we figured he would do some background stuff or something. In truth it took him some time to get going. After setting up he sat down at the bar and interspersed his drinking with several trips to the toilet - don't know if it was nerves or what!? Anyway he didn't start until after 10:30 - during this time the bar had filled with a load of locals. It seemed the whole community was in, everyone from a few young teenage lads to a table of older ladies from just across the road (so they told us)!

Anyway Gerry did eventually get going and was great. He played quite a range of stuff. Garth Brooks, Kenny Rogers, Neil Diamond, Dolly Parton, Robbie Williams, Bryan Adams. His gift was definitely breadth rather than depth. Like i say he played and seemed to know a very wide range of songs, problem was he very often only seemed to know the first verse and chorus of the tunes he was singing! This proved to be quite entertaining in itself! Whatever the case we had lots of fun singing a long and even ended up dancing around to a few tunes before the night was over. Even better i think Gerry enjoyed having us.

Will definitely be back up there sometime soon, they have live entertainment most Saturday nights and the atmosphere is brilliant - just very rural!

The Passion of Hotel Rwanda..
an article by Brian Mclaren

Hotel Rwanda
Directed by Terry George (from NI)

Went with Ricey and Paul the other night to see it.

'Ten years ago, as the country of Rwanda descended into madness,
one man made a promise to protect the family he loved - and ended up finding the
courage to save over 1200 people. Hotel Rwanda tells the inspiring story of a
real life hero Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager in Rwanda who used his courage
and cunning to shelter over a thousand refugess from certain death. While the
rest of the world closed it's eyes, Paul opened his heart and proved that one
good man can make a difference.'
It's been hard to describe to people what i thought of the movie. Entertaining or enjoyable don't seem like the right adjectives to use. I suppose it was pretty bittersweet. On one hand an unbelievably inspiring story of courage and hope and yet on the otherhand a very disturbing movie, giving just a little insight into the horrific suffering of the Rwandan people during the genocide. It also asked major questions of the Western World (including folks like myself) who by in large ignored the events and did very little to intervene.

Inspired and challenged.

High Schools Cup Final 2005
Dromore 26 - 20 Ballynahinch

As expected at any schools final the game was a spirited affair. What with every girl you ever fancied, every boy that ever bullied you etc. in the crowd, a player tends to up his game a little for the occasion. In the end Hinch didn't come away with the intended result but put in a brave performance and showed great fight right into the dying minutes of the game, getting 3 tries down, which is no mean feat against Dromore at Ravenhill.

Whilst not the intended result the lads will be encouraged. They come from a school half the size of Dromore which effects the choice of players available and not only that, they had to field a young team with only four 5th years ( a 5th year tournament!), the rest being made up of fourth year and two young 3rds years. With that in mind the boys will now cast their minds forward to next years tournament having had a taste of what its like to play at Ravenhill and having gained experience in playing an important fixture like this, they will be eager to contest the cup next year when most of them will have come of age.All that said, Dromore were strong and the deserved winners today with some class acts on their side. Their strength and depth just proved a little too much for the Hinch lads today. Posted by Hello
