![]() Wednesday, April 27, 2005 A funny video - watch it a few times with sound turned up! posted by charlie | 10:25 PM | Election looming. Not 100% sure where my vote is headed (perhaps a little clearer on where it is not going!) but for the first time I'm quite interested in Alliance! Will say no more without some further research! posted by charlie | 10:20 PM | I completed the 2005 Ballynahinch Lions Fun Run on Saturday in 5th position! I should quickly add that this is not as lofty an accomplishment as it sounds - 4 of those in front of me where under 15 and a considerable percentage of the field were primary school children. All the same i enjoyed myself and was proud of my time of 21 minutes considering the lack of pre event training. Always a pleasure to run through Montalto! posted by charlie | 10:01 PM | Took a trip to Lancaster last week for an interview at St. Martins College. A few reflections...... 1. Car parks at airports take the mick when it comes to charging. 2. Newsagents in airports take the mick when it comes to charging. 3. Food outlets in airports take the mick when it comes to charging. 4. Airports are havens of daylight robbery! 5. Easyjet seats are no harder than any other airplane i've been on. 6. Liverpool is pretty close when you're going by plane - 30 minute flight. 7. English Transport is a hundred times better than ours here in NI. Far more frequent, covering more places and generally of a higher standard(especially like the Virgin Trains - electronic doors, plugs at each seat for charging phones or powering laptops, lcd displays telling you what station you are at!) 8. Bed and Breakfasts are a good option when it comes to accommodation - cheaper and more personal than hotels and yet pretty good services for the price! 9. Lancaster has a good range of cuisine - Italian, Thai, Turkish, Pub grub etc - tempting!! 10. Lancaster has everything one would need as a student. 11. English people (or maybe just those in Lancaster?) tend not to look you in the eye when you pass them in the street and definitely don't seem to be familiar with the Northern Irish 'what about ya?' greeting. 12. Lancaster is only 50 minutes from the lake District (the mountains hang in the distance very much like the Mournes do in Co. Down). Again tempting! 13. Either Guniness tastes the same in Lancaster as it does at home or I'm just not very good at distinguishing the difference. Whatever the case, the black stuff was a pleasant accompaniment to live Jazz in the background (or perhaps that should be vice versa?). 14. St Martins is a real nice uni - wasn't too big and seemed to have a lot of decent folks about, including a bunch of Northern Irish people, including one very nice northern irish girl from Ballymoney who was working at the gym!! (trying very hard to let that fact play too much of a part in the decision making process!). 15. My literacy skills are not the hottest - had a literacy test and found it pretty tough. eg. Is accom(m)odation spelt with 2 m's or one! I later found out it was two - i had opted for the one m! 16. Interview was nowhere near as formal as i'd expected. One guy originally from Ballymena asked me a few questions in his office. Was glad i'd thought a few things through before going but it was a fairly down to earth procedure! 17. I could survive living in Lancaster alright! More than that i think i might enjoy it! 18. Some choices to make (if i get an offer!) posted by charlie | 9:00 PM | Friday, April 15, 2005 Some Photo's from France..... (hopefully more stories and photos to follow!) First lock of days were spent in Normandy at the D-Day sites. We made a town called Arromanches our base and travelled from here each day to visit the various sites...including the landing beaches, museums, cemeteries etc. At night we cooked up some food and enjoyed a bit of banter including several games of 'Victor change it' (a french version of Jack change it!). ![]() Myself and the lads at the Paratroopers Museum in St. Mere Eglise Towards the end of our time we travelled across the top of France into the Somme region where some important battles were fought as part of WWI. We stayed in Albert (below) and again travelled round some of the museums and mermorials. ![]() Us with the Transport and Accommodation at the campsite in Albert The whole trip was fascinating. Camping was great as usual (of course aided by the superb weather). ! The trip was reasonably cheap - 6 days for less than £20....and that's including a pretty nice car! Still didn't get to see all the sites we'd hoped to - so a return is likely sometime posted by charlie | 7:06 PM | The kid's at the pool, dropping off! Andy Edgar was telling me last week about how a kid dumped in the main swimming pool at Lisburn during his shift. Whilst reassuring to hear, i was surprised when Andy told me that the pool is closed for a full day after an incident of this nature. It takes the filtration system a full day to clean out the pool! I thought they would have just scooped the floatie up with one of them pool nets and then pretend it never happened! In reflection, it's probably good that they don't take that approach. Thinking about this reminded me of a holiday in the south of France. It would be fair to say that the french hygiene policies wouldn't have been so strict. I remember vividly watching a women with a big brown line down her leg jump in for a swim and then get out a few moments later minus the brown line......sickening! posted by charlie | 6:35 PM | Tuesday, April 05, 2005 Got home from France last night. Was away with a few mates from work for a lock of days. Visited lots of WWII sites in Normandy and also some WWI stuff around the Somme region. Had a great time. Some pictures etc. will follow hopefully. posted by charlie | 10:08 PM | |
