Water Week

With the weather picking up last week I got the head under a few times in some local aqua environments. Enjoyed my annual June trip to Bloody Bridge with Al and Nala last Monday night - just can't beat it up there. On Sunday I took the canoe out into the lake and used it as a diving platform. The water was lovely even without a wetsuit - can't say that too often over here. And then on Sunday night i hopped into Hillsborough Lake for a wee dip. Anyone who knows the lake will know that i couldn't have done this for pleasure - it was more to do with being stubborn and not backing down from a challenge! I should thank the fearless Mike Allen for making it all possible by chasing away the swans that had gathered. Erin suggested that the swans could have broken my leg with their wings had i annoyed them enough! Personally i was more concerned about fishing hooks getting lodged in my anatomy!

'I do not accept any absolute formulas for living. No preconceived code can see ahead to everything that can happen in a man's life. As we live, we grow and our beliefs change. They must change. So I think we should live with this constant discovery. We should be open to this adventure in heightened awareness of living. We should stake our whole existence on our willingness to explore and experience.'

More Tuesday night escapades!

As said before, Tuesday nights of late have been affording me the chance to do something new; and this week was no different! Last night I watched my first ever live game of Gaelic Football.

During my time working at the tech on Monday's I've got to know a bunch of young lads who play for Dromara U-16's and they invited me to come up and watch a game last night- i was most willing!

The Dromara club is in a lovely rural setting, tucked away between two drumlins about 2 miles outside Dromara village towards Drumkeeragh Forest. The game was fascinating. I found myself wanting to have a blast at it. It's majorly physical and alot more skillful than what I had imagined!

Glad to say the lads won convincingly, beating Saul - my scoring wouldn't be the hottest, so i don't know how many by!

Not enough puff

At tech today i found out that Malachy, the plastering lecturer played the bag pipes in his spare time. As it turned out he had them in with him to practice over lunch time and I managed to talk him into giving a wee demo. What a noise (+ve!)! After majorly impressing me he offered me a go and of course I had to oblige! Saying it politely, i wasn't that good!

First you have to blow air into the bag continually keeping it topped up - this got me out of breath within seconds. At the same time as doing this, you have to squeeze the bag under your arm and also play the bit that looks a bit like a recorder, that gives the notes. I couldn't even get a noise out of this bit never mind think about organising my fingers to play some sort of tune!

Much respect will now go towards bagpipers in the future!

Got the bug!

After a few nights discussion and deliberation I'm glad to say, that if all goes to plan, this time next month I'll be in Prague!

Myself, Johnny, Rebecca Shannon, Sparkle and Andy Edgar are heading to Prague on the 5th of July where we'll spend a few days having a good look around. We're then going to activate an interrail pass with a view to taking in some other unexplored(by us at least!) eastern european countries over the following three weeks, including Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia! We booked the flights into Prague and out of Slovenia last night! The plan is to camp and stay in hostels along the way.

I'm really looking forward to it. I've wanted to do this for some time now and its a great bunch to be travelling with! Part of the next month will involve researching the various countries we're going to visit and also just picking up general inter-railing tips! Any useful information or tips from folks dropping by here would be welcomed!

Moving on

Filled in Uni choices this week. Decided on Sports Science at Jordanstown over 3 years. Being honest I could see it far enough - really just feels like the means to an end at the minute but there's a good chance that'll change when i get up there and get into it! Ruled out Lancaster on financial reasons - was just going to be too much of a stretch on the bank account! So I guess if i'm to hook up with the nice Ballymoney girl in the gym over there I'll just have to go there on holiday sometime!

I leave work in 4 weeks time which will be sad. I've had a good time at the High school. But new things await!

Hamstring Pings!

I started my TAG rugby season last night and finished it approximately 3 minutes later! The old hamstring just wasn't up to it and pinged on my first proper sprint. Very annoying. Means I'll not get any rugby now until pre-season training at the end of July. Kinda sums up this season in general. So hard to watch and not play.

And things got worse tonight. 3 other members of our team, 'The Maulers' had to come off tonight with the same injury, Johnny being one of them!

Tuesday nights over the past couple of weeks have been fun.

Last week I headed out with my mate Jeff to do a little water Ski-ing and wakeboarding in Strangford Lough. Took me a few times to get up - it was my first time on a rope - but once i got up it was a lot of fun. The water off the wake was real calm - a cracking feeling when you're just gliding across the smooth surface. The wakeboarding wasn't just as sucessful but i was comforted to find out that the board was an intermediate board and harder to use - I'm sticking to that explanation anyway!

This week i headed over to Hillsborough where my mate Mike was drawing silage. It brought back lots of memories of the days when i was a kid in Carryduff, pestering the drivers from the farm next to us for rides in their tractors during silage time! I was impressed by some of Mike's driving skills - he got the tractor and trailor through some fairly tight gaps last night. On the downside the tractor didn't have any passenger seats and i ended up sitting up at the back of the cab on a ledge. That combined with the bumpy ride led to a fairly sore posterior by the end of the evening!
